Erick & I just celebrated our 10 year anniversary.  Well, “celebrated” isn’t quite the word to use since we didn’t even get to be together the entire day, but we hit that milestone.  Poor Erick was on call, so he had to be at work by 6am & didn’t get off until noon the next day (can you imagine having to do that at least once a week—on top of just getting 1 1 day off a week most of the time?).  One of my best friends, Iris, came up to visit for a few days & we had a great time together.  She babysat Joshua while we went out for a quick dinner date on the 16th, a day early (with baby in tow).

We went to our first movie as a family to see the new “Shrek” film.  Joshua was mesmerized.  Last week, I found our old DVDs for the first two in the series & watched them with Josh to see what he would think.  Other than a couple of scary parts, he loved them!  I’m really glad that Erick was able to take a few hours off to go with us.  Zachary was on good behavior & slept throughout most of it, as expected, although I did end up nursing him a couple of times when he had something to say.

Exactly one year after our household goods were delivered to our old house, we had them taken to our new house.  How’s that for celebrating our anniversary of moving to Washington?  We’d rented a U-Haul & Erick took a load of stuff on Sunday, but there was still a LOT for the Starving Students to take over!  Moving was not quite the way we’d planned to spend Erick’s one week of leave, but it was good timing.  Dad came up yet again to help out, which was yet again much appreciated.  All 4 of us Heygoods turned out to be sick with a nasty GI bug, which was also bad for our unpacking schedule.  But fortunately, we all resolved sufficiently without a hospital visit by any of us this time!

Zachary had his first round of shots at his 2 month doctor visit the other day.  He enjoyed the appointment—up until the end.  As expected, he scored about a month delayed on his developmental test, although the med student who did the initial exam forgot about his prematurity & freaked out when he didn’t meet all of the milestones for other 2 month olds (ones who were actually supposed to be born in March!).  But for babies who were supposed to be born in April like he was, he is doing just fine.  As for his stats, Zachary is still on the small size, but completely healthy.  He’s 9lb 13oz & 20 ½“ (4th & <3rd percentiles for 2 month olds, but 26% & 3% for 1 month olds).  So he definitely hasn’t inherited the Royer height (at least not yet!)!

  • We’re moving!

We’d thought about this for quite some time, but now it’s official—we’re moving!  Our current house is just not working for us anymore.  Now that baby is here, we’ll eventually need to give him a bedroom, which would mean getting rid of the guest room.  Since Mom may be visiting frequently to escape hick town life at Ft. Polk (Rock was unfortunately just transferred back to this undesirable base pretty much in the middle of “Nowhere,” Louisiana) & we hope other family members & friends will come visit often, we really need another room.  Plus, it’s got 3 levels, & the stairs have gotten to be quite a pain in the butt to deal with.  I was also worried that Joshua would forget to close the baby gate at the top of the stairs once Zachary is crawling or toddling around.  When I mentioned that we might be moving to our current landlord, she mentioned that she’d be more worried that Joshua would actually push Zachary down the stairs since that’s what a cousin of hers did to his brother.  At least she was pretty understanding about it, although she said she would be sad to see us go.  I’ve been looking for a place since the end of last year, but nothing has panned out—until now.

The boys had a joint cardiologist appointment yesterday.  It was my first big outing with both of them so I was a bit nervous—trying to keep up with Joshua is no easy task without having to manage a newborn in a stroller!  He was excited to be able to wear his puppy backpack (a kid backpack with a leash for Mommy to hold onto!), thankfully.  Josh “helped” push the stroller & told Zachary all about what to expect during the exam.  Erick is doing his cardiology rotation so he was not only there for the appointment, but he got to help do the echo!  Not many kids can say that their dad did an ultrasound on them.  The holes in Zachary’s heart that were there during his echo a few hours after he was born had closed, as expected.  Dr. Puntel looked all around & couldn’t find anything structurally wrong with his heart—yeah!!!  While Zachary was being examined, Joshua amused himself with toys & bubbles.

Zachary is one month old today—wow!  He’s still a tiny little thing but is a lot bigger than when he was born.  I’m bummed that I couldn’t take him to Madigan to see exactly how much he weighs, but I’d be willing to bet that he’s close to 7 pounds by now.  What a big boy he’s becoming!

  • Zachary’s due date

Today is Zachary’s official due date, although it’s hard to imagine not having him in our lives for the past 4 weeks.  He’s still so tiny, but does not look like the newborn he would be if he was born now.  Zachary’s gained about a pound & grown an inch.  While Zach’s still on the small side, his doctors say that he’s growing nicely.  It took less than 2 weeks for him to surpass his birth weight so no more weight checks for us—the fatten the baby mission was a success!  He still sleeps a lot & I have a hard time waking him up to eat (without getting him too upset!), but it’s getting better.  It’s still not easy waking him up every 2-3 hours at night when he looks like a little angel sleeping peacefully.  I look forward to being able to just let him sleep so I can, too!  By then, I imagine that he’ll be waking himself (& me) up on his own on a regular basis.  As it is, nighttimes are getting trickier, as Zachary is often hard to console & takes quite a while to put down in his co-sleeper.  He’ll fall asleep almost instantaneously in our arms most of the time, but as soon as we oh, so slowly lay him down in the co-sleeper, he seems to wake up & protest.  He gets so loud sometimes that Erick will even wake up to help—& as sound a sleeper he is because of his sleep deprivation from work, that says a lot!

Zachary is a week old!  He passed the hearing check & our “fatten the baby” mission resulted in a 1 ounce weight gain.  Zach has even made it to his first outing to a store (to Babies-R-Us to get more newborn-sized diapers!) & to a restaurant (he slept through our entire meal).  Joshua has fun trying to teach Zachary how to nurse by pretending he has a straw & demonstrating how to suck in.  He’s happy that he gets to be the one to teach his brother how to do so many things, so he’ll demonstrate how he can get dressed, go potty, wash his hands, & lots of other things that he’s able to do.  Too cute!

  • Welcome, Zachary!

Zachary Jordan couldn’t wait until today as planned—our little guy has been eager to join the outside world!  I woke up in the morning on the 18th ready to go to my final OB appointment but ended up needing to rush to Labor & Delivery instead to get checked out.  Little did I know that I wouldn’t end up leaving the hospital for a few days—& that I would leave with our baby!  The docs wanted to keep me for several hours to monitor things & then decided for me to stay overnight.  The plan was to most likely bump up the amniocentesis to Friday morning & see how Tiny’s lungs were doing.  The results were supposed to take anywhere from 1-2 hours to up to 48 hours, so there was plenty of time.  If he was OK, then they’d schedule the c-section for later in the day.  Otherwise, they’d give me steroid injections to mature his lungs & do the section in a couple of days.  They kept me NPO (nothing by mouth) just in case, which I did not enjoy since I hadn’t eaten since Wednesday night.  Needless to say, I didn’t get much sleep that night, with the combination of discomfort/pain, excitement, & anxiety.  It was explained that there was about a 2/3 chance of my needing to have a blood transfusion & about a 20% chance of major complications that would require more invasive surgery, so there was plenty to think about overnight.  But we were mainly excited about possibly getting to meet Tiny in person soon.
